The largest botanical garden in Canada, and one of the largest in the world, had been considered an ecological jewel at the tip of Lake Ontario for close to 80 years. But the total redevelopment of its 2.43-hectare (six-acre) Rock Garden starting in 2013 presented some unique challenges to Aldershot Landscape Contractors.

A former traffic corridor now provides a welcoming 1.7-kilometre waterfront promenade for pedestrians and cyclists. In addition to providing more beauty and green space, Aldershot Landscape has also helped completely reorganize traffic: Car and streetcar lanes are together in the middle, with wider sidewalks on both sides. A multi-use recreational trail runs along the south side of the street, allowing cyclists to ride far more safely.

When Aldershot Landscape created the landscape for the prestigious Toronto Four Seasons Hotel, part of the job involved laying out a stone “carpet.” One worker had to stand on the site calling out colours, as others arranged the 6x6 blocks of granite in various shades of grey, red and black. The result? A spectacular, oversized carpet, designed to evoke a 19th century aesthetic. And, in the centre of the tight, one-acre site, sits a huge, 4-storey red cast iron fountain built by a foundry in Alabama.
